Story Of My Life: Beachin'

From the second that it started snowing in Nashville, I started daydreaming of SUNSHINE!
The snowpocalypse
kept me inside, watching Netflix and eating canned chili every day. When I could finally leave my apartment, I was more than happy - I felt liberated... and I needed a salad. The same feeling came over me when I landed in Malibu, California last week.

A few of my songwriter friends and I decided to take a writing adventure outside of Nashville for a week. We all needed the sunshine and inspiration boost after the week of being stuck inside. From the second we landed, the could smell the salt in the air coming from the ocean and feel that cool California breeze. Although our flight was delayed and we didn’t actually land until 12:30 that night - NOTHING could kill the excitement of being in a fresh environment with some of my favorite people.
Every day was absolutely beautiful and incredible in all ways possible. I woke up without an alarm (HALLELUJAH!) and walked out to the living room. The living room was covered in the sunshine that came in through the glass windows. It hit my face and made every bone in my body warm and comforted. CAN I GET A SECOND HALLELUJAH? Danelle and Jason made a pot of coffee and we all sat outside with our mugs of coffee, our guitars, and began to write a song.
One of the many things that made my heart happy was that this writing trip felt like a vacation. There was no start time, no time stamp, no pressure to finish at a certain time. We wrote when we felt inspired. One day we started writing in the morning, took a break and ran around town for a bit, grabbed food on the Malibu Pier, and then went back to the house and finished writing that song. Everything flowed so naturally. Someone told me a few months ago, “Songwriting should never feel like work. If it does - then you are doing something wrong.” and I think that is completely true. The thing that is so incredible about songwriting is that you get to walk into a room with people you love, share your stories, and come out with a song you love. Every day is a different small adventure and every day that I get to write a song with people that I adore, is a blessing. That’s exactly what I got to do on this trip - but we also got to have mini slumber parties every night and eat yummy burritos with ... wait for it... HAND MADE TORTILLAS AND MASSIVE AVOCADO! Yes, it was as un-freaking-believable as it sounds.
I am so grateful to have Danelle, Tiffany and Jason invite me to Malibu to write with them for a week! It was my first writing trip and while I will admit that I was nervous, I am already DYING to go on my next one! Giving my brain that much needed space for a week really made me appreciate a lot of people I am surrounded by. I love that everyone that I am lucky to be working with is pushing my creative limits while still allowing me to grow and breathe.

There is a quote that reads:
“The best kind of people are the ones that come into your life and make you see the sun where you once saw clouds. The people that believe in you so much, you start to believe in you too. The people that love you, simply for being you. The once in a lifetime kind of people."
I am trying every day to apply this to my life. I have 3 new family members for life and I don’t say that lightly. I hope someday that I can have even half the heart and talent that these 3 people have. I will always be constantly learning and growing, and thank God that I am being influenced by the group of people that I am.
Until Next Time...
